In season 4 episode 9 of The Twilight Zone, entitled "Printer's Devil," a struggling newspaper editor named Douglas Winter is at his wit's end after losing his job and contemplating suicide. In the midst of his despair, a mysterious stranger named Mr. Smith appears and offers to help Douglas run the newspaper. Smith claims to be the devil himself, and Douglas initially refuses his offer, but eventually agrees out of desperation for the success of the newspaper and his own life.
As Mr. Smith takes over the newspaper, he begins to transform it into a popular and successful publication. However, as time goes on, it becomes apparent that there are dark forces at work. Mr. Smith seems to have a supernatural ability to predict news events before they happen, but the stories always end up causing harm and chaos. Douglas becomes increasingly suspicious of Mr. Smith's true intentions and begins to regret making a deal with the devil.
The tension escalates as Mr. Smith becomes more and more controlling, taking over not only the newspaper but Douglas's personal life as well. Douglas's wife and colleagues warn him of the dangers of dealing with the devil, but he is trapped and sees no way out. Their only hope seems to lie in a mysterious typewriter which was discovered in the newspaper's basement, and the strange messages it begins to produce.
"Printer's Devil" is a suspenseful and thought-provoking episode that delves into themes of power, corruption, and the consequences of making deals with the devil. It is a thrilling addition to the unique and iconic universe of The Twilight Zone.
