When he reaches Harry Quebert's home, he learns of an explosive secret: a dead girl was found in Harry's property. Harry is arrested and Goldman is determined to solve the mystery of who really did it.
The pilot episode, "How Does Your Garden Grow?," opens with Marcus enjoying his celebrity status at a glamorous book launch. Meanwhile, Harry is busy working on his next novel in a small town in Maine. When Marcus receives a call from his former mentor, he learns that Harry has been accused of murder. Shocked by the news, Marcus decides to hurry to Maine to try and help his former professor and friend.
Upon his arrival in the small town, Marcus begins looking for the answers to Harry's predicament. He meets with the local sheriff who is leading the investigation and tries to gain more insight into the situation. As information begins to surface, Marcus learns that the body of a young girl had been buried in Harry's backyard more than 30 years ago. As he and the sheriff investigate further, Marcus learns that the girl was actually Nola Kellergan, a former flame of Harry's and a young girl whom he had befriended and mentored over the years.
Marcus becomes determined to unravel the mystery and does his own investigation into the crime. He starts meeting with different townsfolk to see if anyone knows anything or have a clue about what happened. Investigating through people's comments, he discovers that Kellergan was a writer herself who was working on a novel before she vanished.
The relationship between Harry and Nola is revealed through flashback scenes along with some of Nola's personal journal entries, which serve to paint a picture of a relationship that was both powerful and complicated. Marcus continues to interview people around town, including Kellergan's father, and slowly begins to uncover an intricate web of secrets and lies that have been kept hidden within the small community.
The first episode leaves viewers with many questions and unresolved matters regarding the murder of Nola Kellergan. The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair is a thrilling mystery drama that keeps you on edge with its twists and turns. The chemistry between Patrick Dempsey and Ben Schnetzer is fantastic as they respectively play the role of mentor and protégé.
