Ep 9. Cat in the Fiddle

  • September 20, 1980

Tom and Jerry Comedy Show is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, and the ninth episode of the first season, Cat in the Fiddle, is no exception to the entertaining cartoon series. In this episode, Tom, the cat, is given a mission by his owner to guard the family cow, Lucy, while she is sleeping in the barn. Tom, who appears to be extremely happy with his responsibility, starts singing and playing the fiddle to entertain himself. However, his music wakes Jerry, the mouse, who is fast asleep in the barn.

As soon as Jerry wakes up, he begins his usual mischief by stealing Tom's fiddle and playing it in an unknown melody, which, in turn, wakes up the sleeping cow. Tom, who is gleefully playing his fiddle, notices that the cow is awake and tries to get her back to sleep. He begs Jerry to stop playing the fiddle, but Jerry refuses to comply, prompting a chase scene that everyone is familiar with.

During the chase, the three inhabitants of the barn try to outsmart each other with hilarious antics that leave the audience in splits. The fast-paced chase scene, coupled with the antics of Tom and Jerry, makes for a perfect comic relief.

As the episode progresses, Jerry manages to get his hands on a music sheet of the fiddle's tune, which allows him to play the fiddle with ease. Meanwhile, Tom tries to steal the fiddle back from Jerry, but his attempts end up in vain. The persistent battle between Tom and Jerry causes Lucy to wake up again, prompting Tom to switch his attention to the cow once more.

In an effort to quell the cow's disturbance, Tom produces a milk bottle to feed the cow, but the bottle ends up in Jerry's hands, who, as usual, starts goofing around with it, which results in another chase scene that shows off Tom's high level of agility and physical powers.

As the episode reaches its climax, Tom and Jerry engage in a tug of war with the bottle of milk, which eventually leaves the cow drenched in milk. But the duo doesn't stop there; they continue to fight until the fiddle is completely destroyed, and the cow is asleep again.

Cat in the Fiddle is an excellent addition to the Tom and Jerry Comedy Show series. It exemplifies the high level of humor and exaggerated physicality that has made the series an all-time classic. The episode is a must-watch for anyone who wants to enjoy a good laugh and an entertaining story.
