Coroner's office detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) continues to investigate the strange case of why young mother Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) would stab a man to death in broad daylight on a crowded beach. In episode 3, things begin to unravel as Harry probes deeper into Cora's past. After seeing the bruises on Cora's skin during her examination, Harry becomes convinced that there is much more to her story than what she has revealed so far. He decides to visit her in prison for a more thorough interview.
During their conversation, Cora tells Harry about memories from her childhood that have been suppressed for years. She reveals that her mother was a religious fanatic who inflicted physical punishments on her and her younger sister, Phoebe. Cora's father was passive and did nothing to intervene, which only made her feel more isolated and angry. With Harry's help, she begins to remember scraps of her childhood, including trips to Lake Redwood with her family and a mysterious man who would sometimes visit their home.
Harry begins to piece together the fragments of Cora's life, hoping to find some clue that will unlock the mystery of what led to the stabbing. He visits Cora's hometown of Beverwyck, seeking any information he can find about her past. He talks to her old friends and neighbors and learns more about her mother's mental illness and the strange behavior of her younger sister, who died of cancer at a young age.
Meanwhile, Cora's husband, Mason (Christopher Abbott), is struggling to understand his wife's violent outburst. He visits her in prison and tries to get her to open up about her past, but she refuses to tell him anything. He speaks with a lawyer who suggests that they plead temporary insanity, but Mason remains unconvinced.
As Harry continues to investigate, he discovers a connection between Cora's past and the mysterious man who visited her family. He realizes that this man may hold the key to unlocking the truth behind the stabbing. Harry confronts the man, who denies any involvement, but Harry is persistent and refuses to let the case remain unsolved.
As the episode comes to a close, Cora visits with a psychologist who helps her recover more memories from her childhood. She remembers a traumatic event that occurred during a family trip to Lake Redwood that may shed light on her current state of mind. With Harry and her lawyer by her side, Cora prepares to face the consequences of her actions.
