Bart finds himself in possession of a credit card and decides to take advantage of it. In no time, he racks up a substantial debt, purchasing a host of useless items such as a digital pet and a copy of Girlfriends magazine. When Homer discovers Bart's debt, he confiscates his son's purchases and tells him he must pay off the balance himself.
Desperate for a way to repay the money, Bart stumbles across an ad in the back of a comic book offering a bounty for a lost dog named Laddie. Realizing he can turn a profit by finding the dog and collecting the reward, Bart sets out on a mission to track down Laddie.
After several unsuccessful attempts, Bart finally stumbles across Laddie, a miraculously intelligent and obedient Border Collie. After befriending the dog, Bart decides to keep him as his own, believing that Laddie will be his key to financial freedom.
However, Bart soon discovers that owning a dog is much more than he bargained for. Laddie's incredible intelligence comes with a high price tag, as he quickly becomes more of a burden than a financial asset. As Bart struggles to keep up with Laddie's demanding training regimen, he realizes that he may have made a serious mistake.
Meanwhile, Homer is left to deal with the aftermath of Bart's credit card fiasco. With his son's debt still outstanding, Homer is faced with the possibility of having to pay off the bill himself. As tensions rise between father and son, Homer begins to regret the decision to take away Bart's credit card in the first place.
As the episode progresses, the two storylines intersect as Bart becomes embroiled in a complex game of canine cat and mouse. With Laddie leading him on a series of wild adventures, Bart begins to realize that he has formed an unexpected bond with the intelligent dog.
In the end, both Bart and Homer learn valuable lessons about responsibility and the true value of friendship. Through their experiences with Laddie, they discover that there are things in life that cannot be bought with money, such as trust, loyalty, and love.
