In season 3 episode 18 of The Simpsons titled "Separate Vocations," the episode begins with a career day at Springfield Elementary School. The students get a glimpse into various professions, but every job seems less exciting than the one before it. Meanwhile, Homer is forced to work late at the power plant and misses out on spending time with his family.
Marge suggests to Homer that they switch jobs for a day so he can see what her life is like. This leads Homer to discover that working at the local supermarket is not as easy as he thought it would be. Marge, on the other hand, struggles to keep up with the demands of being a safety inspector at the power plant.
Meanwhile, Bart takes a career aptitude test and is told that he would make a great police officer. Excited by this prospect, Bart joins the Springfield Junior Police Academy where he excels in all aspects of training. However, when Bart and his classmates are put in charge of Springfield's abandoned prison, they soon realize that the life of a police officer is not as glamorous as they thought it would be.
As the episode progresses, the Simpson family members attempt to adjust to their new roles. Homer's antics at the supermarket cause chaos, while Marge's strict adherence to safety procedures at the power plant causes tension between her and her coworkers.
