In Treehouse of Horror XXVII, the twenty-seventh annual Simpsons Halloween special, the Simpsons house turns out to be haunted by the ghosts of famous authors that died while grappling with writer's block. Homer and Marge are kidnapped by the aliens Kang and Kodos and are forced into a Truman Show-style scenario where they have to continuously perform for the aliens' entertainment. Meanwhile, Bart discovers time-traveling abilities and decides to use them to prank his family and alter historical moments.
The first segment, titled "Dry Hard," features Homer buying a Halloween prop of an old prison electrical chair and accidentally killing himself while sitting on it. He becomes a ghost haunting the house and other famous authors that suffered from writer's block, including Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, and Agatha Christie. The ghosts compete with each other to see who can write the best murder mystery. In the end, all the ghosts are revealed to have collaborated on a story, with Poe providing the ending twist.
The second segment, "BFF R.I.P.," sees Kang and Kodos abduct Homer and Marge and force them into a situation where they have to continuously perform tasks and skits for the aliens. They are oblivious to their situation's true nature and continue to perform until they are finally rescued by their children.
The final segment, titled "Moefinger," features Bart discovering a time-traveling device and using it to pull practical jokes on his family, including sending Homer and Principal Skinner back in time to the Wild West and messing with the time stream by stepping on bugs and sneezing on ancient artifacts. Eventually, Bart's pranks have unintended consequences that threaten to alter history permanently.
Overall, Treehouse of Horror XXVII continues the tradition of delivering spooky and hilarious Halloween-themed stories that have become synonymous with The Simpsons franchise. With its blend of pop culture references, clever writing, and over-the-top humor, the episode is sure to please fans of the long-running animated series.
