Bart has always been known as the troublemaker in the Simpson household, but what happens when he actually starts to excel at something? In "A Test Before Trying," the tenth episode of The Simpsons' 24th season, we find out just that.
The episode opens with Bart sitting in class, daydreaming about his favorite comic book hero. When his teacher, Mrs. Krabappel, notices that he's not paying attention, she suggests that he take an intelligence test. Bart initially scoffs at the idea, but when he's told that he may be held back if he doesn't do well, he decides to buckle down and study.
Over the course of the episode, we see Bart take the test and get a surprisingly high score. This newfound intelligence turns his world upside down - he suddenly becomes popular amongst his classmates, and even starts to impress his dad, Homer.
However, as Bart's intelligence grows, so too does his arrogance. He begins to look down on his former friends, and even becomes a bit of a know-it-all. It's only when he puts his intelligence to the test by participating in a science fair that he learns a valuable lesson about humility.
As always, The Simpsons' trademark humor is on full display in this episode. From Homer's ridiculous attempts to bond with Bart, to Lisa's jealousy over her brother's newfound intelligence, there are plenty of laughs to be had.
But what really stands out about "A Test Before Trying" is the way it tackles the theme of intelligence. The episode doesn't shy away from exploring the idea that intelligence can be a double-edged sword - it can open doors, but it can also lead to arrogance and isolation. And while the episode never gets too heavy-handed with its message, it's a refreshing change of pace for a show that's often content to coast on its humor alone.
Overall, "A Test Before Trying" is a strong episode of The Simpsons. It's funny, it's thought-provoking, and it features some great character moments for Bart in particular. Whether you're a longtime fan of the show or a newcomer, it's definitely worth checking out.
