The Simpsons season 2 episode 12, named "The Way We Was," chronicles the story of how Homer and Marge met in high school and fell in love. The episode is presented as a flashback, with Marge and Homer narrating the story to their children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
The story begins on a snowy day at Springfield High School, where Marge and her friend are preparing to attend a school dance. Meanwhile, Homer is in detention, writing lines on the chalkboard. Marge enters the detention room to borrow some supplies, and Homer immediately falls for her. After introducing himself, he convinces Marge to take him to the dance, despite her initial hesitations.
At the dance, Homer and Marge have a great time until Marge's ex-boyfriend, Artie Ziff, shows up. Artie is rich, charming, and has always had a crush on Marge. He tries to win her back by offering her a ride home in his car, but Marge refuses and leaves with Homer instead.
From there, the episode follows Homer and Marge's relationship through their high school years. They attend prom together, although Homer's original plan to take Marge to the prom in his car falls apart, leaving them to take the bus. Despite this, they have a magical evening together.
The couple's relationship hits a rough patch when Marge discovers that Homer has failed to complete a crucial project for class, potentially ruining his chances of graduating. In an attempt to salvage his future, Homer decides to drop out of high school and get a job at the nuclear power plant.
Marge is upset by this decision and they have a fight, leading them to break up. Homer is then seen working at the power plant, regretful of his decision to drop out of school and lose Marge.
In the present day, after telling their story, Homer and Marge reconcile and reaffirm their love for each other. The episode ends with them sharing a romantic moment while watching the stars.
