Homer Simpson is feeling left out of his family's lives when he realizes that he doesn't know anything about his kids. In an effort to be a better parent, he hires a private detective to do background checks on Bart and Lisa. However, he soon finds himself in over his head when the detective mistakenly leads him to believe that Bart is plotting to kill him. Homer tries to connect with Lisa by taking her out on a date but ends up being more interested in the dessert menu than his own daughter. Meanwhile, Marge feels guilty for not including Homer in the family activities and tries to make it up to him by planning a surprise family evening at home, but the plan goes awry when the surprise backfires. Homer eventually realizes that he doesn't need to know everything about his kids to love them and be there for them.
