After the resident fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Krabappel gives Bart a bad grade on an assignment, he decides to get revenge by prank calling her using a tape recorder. However, his prank goes awry when Edna accidentally overhears a recording of Bart declaring his love for her. Much to Bart's surprise, Edna reciprocates his feelings and the two embark on a secret romance.
Meanwhile, Homer becomes obsessed with a new burger joint in town called Greasy Joe's and begins eating there every day. He soon discovers that the burgers contain a secret sauce that causes hallucinations, leading him on a trippy journey through Springfield.
As Bart and Edna try to keep their relationship hidden, they face various obstacles such as Bart's classmates teasing him about his crush and Edna's overbearing mother. Eventually, they come clean to the school principal and Edna's mother, but their relationship comes to an abrupt end when Edna is fired for dating a student.
Feeling guilty for his role in Edna's dismissal, Bart sets out to win her back by putting on a play that he wrote called "The Christmas That Almost Wasn't But Then Was." The play is a success and Edna is moved by Bart's efforts to make things right, forgiving him and resuming their relationship.
Overall, "Special Edna" (a.k.a. "Love and Marking") is a heartwarming and comedic episode that explores themes of love, forgiveness, and redemption.
