In The Simpsons season 11 episode 3, titled "Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner," Homer becomes a food critic after his harsh review of a local BBQ restaurant gets published in a newspaper. He enjoys his newfound status, receiving free meals and gaining attention from important figures in the food industry.
However, his ego gets the best of him when he begins to overly criticize every restaurant he visits. This causes worry for Marge, who fears that Homer's harsh words may ruin small family-owned restaurants. When a French restaurant in Springfield, owned by two brothers, becomes the target of Homer's next review, Marge convinces him to give it a fair chance and see the hard work that the owners put into their food.
Homer is hesitant at first, but after witnessing the passion and dedication of the restaurant owners, he begins to appreciate the food and even gives them a positive review. However, the damage has already been done, as the bad publicity from Homer's initial negative review has caused the restaurant to nearly go out of business. The brothers face the difficult decision of whether to close their beloved business or to compromise their values and change their cuisine to suit Homer's tastes.
Meanwhile, Lisa struggles with a different kind of criticism when she writes an essay about the inventor of the phonograph during a school contest. Her essay is met with harsh criticism from the judges, who feel that her writing is too emotional and lacks academic prowess. Undeterred, Lisa enlists the help of a tough-talking writing coach, who teaches her how to appeal to her audience while still staying true to her own voice.
In the end, both Homer and Lisa learn valuable lessons about the power of words and how they can greatly impact others. "Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner" takes a humorous yet insightful look at the food critic industry and the importance of fair and honest reviews.
