In The Simpsons season 1 episode 4, entitled "There's No Disgrace Like Home," the dysfunctional family attends Dr. Marvin Monroe's family therapy session. Homer becomes jealous after learning that his co-worker has a nicer television, and decides to buy one for the family despite their financial struggles. However, the new TV causes a power surge that shocks the Simpsons and their guests during a game of spin the bottle. Embarrassed about their dysfunctional behavior, the Simpsons are desperate to improve their family dynamics and win the "family of the year" prize, but their efforts only lead to more chaos and dysfunction. In the end, they learn to appreciate each other and embrace their quirks, with the help of a little shock therapy.
