All this takes place against the background of Wexford's strained home life, with Sylvia and Neil both down in the mouth at their personal fates. Wexford takes them along to a garden party hosted by the Arab owners of a newly built local hypermarket. Though it provides light relief it doesn't provide work for the young couple. Then news comes in of the discovery of another body, a young woman buried in a shallow grave, which a metal-detecting enthusiast stumbled across. When Wexford is told that it is a black woman, he fears the worst and summons Dr. and Mrs. Akande to the local mortuary. But the body is not that of Melanie and though there is immediate relief, the mystery deepens. No matter how hard he tries, Wexford can discover nothing which sheds light on the identity of the black woman. He speaks to every black and Asian person in Kingsmarkham - all 18 of them - but no information is forthcoming. As if things aren't bad enough, another black woman is attacked but this time the victim evades death long enough to provide Wexford with the key which, once turned, leads him down a path as uncompromising as it is spine-chilling. The result causes Wexford to question all his past prejudices and re-examine his perceptions.
