Almost apologetic about the situation, Akande tries to look for positive reasons for the disappearance. Wexford however spares no pains in his attempt to find Melanie. He follows her movements as far as the Stowerton DSS office, where she had started claiming social security, but after that the trail goes cold. Melanie is officially listed as a missing person. Then, a few days later, the story takes another twist when a body of a woman is discovered. She turns out to be the new claims advisor at the DSS. And the last person she is known to have spoken to is Melanie Akande. In investigating this death, Wexford digs up a complicated and slightly sordid background which includes a nine year long affair with a married man. But no solution to the identity of the killer is forthcoming nor is any light thrown on Melanie's whereabouts...
