The episode "A.C.H." focuses on the aftermath of a shooting at a convenience store. Officer John Nolan and his team are called to the scene where they find one victim dead and another injured. As they investigate the incident, they realize that the shooter might have been aiming for a third person who managed to escape unharmed.
Meanwhile, Officer Henry Chen struggles to balance his work as a police officer and his duty as a father. He has to deal with his young daughter's allergies, which force him to carry an EpiPen at all times. When his daughter's school calls and tells him that she is having a severe allergic reaction, Henry rushes to her side but soon realizes that his EpiPen is missing from his pocket.
Elsewhere, Sergeant Grey attempts to mend his relationship with his estranged son. He reaches out to him after years of not communicating, but his son rejects his overtures, leaving Grey feeling hurt and alone.
As the investigation into the convenience store shooting heats up, Nolan and his team get closer to identifying the shooter. They discover that the victim who managed to escape is part of a drug ring that the shooter was targeting. But just as they think they have everything under control, a shocking twist throws everything into chaos.
The Rookie's season 4 episode 5 does an excellent job of balancing the show's police procedural elements with personal storylines for the characters. The shooting investigation provides a solid, tense foundation for the episode, but it's the character moments that truly shine. Henry's struggle to juggle his job and his responsibilities as a parent is relatable and touching, and Grey's attempt to reconnect with his son adds a layer of emotional complexity to the episode.
The show's ensemble cast remains as strong as ever. Nathan Fillion continues to anchor the show as Nolan, bringing both humor and pathos to the role. Alyssa Diaz's Angela Lopez is as tough and capable as ever, and Richard T. Jones's Sergeant Grey is an intriguing character with a lot of untapped potential.
Overall, "A.C.H." is another strong episode of The Rookie that balances intriguing police work with compelling character development. It's a must-watch for fans of the show and a good entry point for newcomers looking to check out one of the best police procedurals on TV.
