The Rookie is a crime drama TV series that follows the story of John Nolan, a man in his 40s who has decided to become a police officer after a life-changing experience. In season 1 episode 1, titled Pilot, we are introduced to Nolan as he embarks on this new journey.
The episode starts with John Nolan having a conversation with his therapist about his decision to become a police officer. We learn that he is a divorced father of a teenage son, and he previously had a successful business career. However, a life-threatening event made him re-evaluate his life and led him to pursue this new path.
He arrives in Los Angeles, where he is supposed to attend the police academy, and soon realizes that he is the oldest rookie in his class. Moreover, he isn't taken seriously by the other cadets, who view him as an old man trying to relive his youth. But Nolan is determined to prove them wrong and succeed in this new career.
As the episode progresses, we get to see Nolan's interactions with his fellow cadets and instructors, including the tough but fair training officer, Talia Bishop. We also learn a little bit about the other cadets, including the ambitious Lucy Chen and the cocky Jackson West.
However, the real action starts when Nolan and his training officer are called to a bank robbery in progress. Despite his lack of experience, Nolan's instincts kick in, and he manages to help subdue one of the robbers. Meanwhile, his training officer, who was injured in the incident, recognizes Nolan's potential and decides to mentor him.
From there, the episode goes on to explore the challenges that Nolan faces as a rookie police officer, both on and off the job. He struggles to balance his personal life with his new career, and he has to navigate the complexities of working in law enforcement, including dealing with difficult suspects and other dangerous situations.
Overall, season 1 episode 1 of The Rookie is a strong start to the series. It sets up the premise of the show well and introduces us to the main characters, while leaving us wanting to know more about their stories. The episode does a good job of balancing the drama and action, and we get a good sense of the high stakes involved in being a police officer. It's a promising start to what becomes an engrossing, thrilling and at times emotional series.
