Jim Rockford is a private investigator, always ready to take an interesting case. In the "Counter Gambit" episode of The Rockford Files, Jim is asked by a man named Andrew Smith to investigate his fiancée's disappearance. Smith is worried because the woman in question, Marsha Russell, is a known gambler and has been spending a lot of time at a local casino.
Rockford quickly begins to dig into the case, questioning the casino's staff and patrons to find any leads on Marsha's whereabouts. He discovers that Marsha is not the only woman to have recently disappeared from the casino, and begins to suspect foul play.
Meanwhile, Jim's old friend and fellow private investigator, Lance White, is also on the case. Lance is a flashy and somewhat inept investigator who often finds himself in over his head. He has been hired by a wealthy man named Clifford Raymond, who believes that his daughter may have been kidnapped from the casino. Lance is convinced that he has found the woman, but Rockford is skeptical of his friend's investigation methods.
As Rockford continues to delve into the case, he uncovers a web of deception and criminal activity. He enlists the help of his friend, Sgt. Dennis Becker, to gather evidence and build a case against the criminals behind the kidnappings.
As the investigation heats up, Rockford finds himself in danger, and must use all of his intelligence and resourcefulness to stay alive and bring the criminals to justice. In the end, he uncovers the shocking truth behind the mysterious disappearances, and delivers justice for the victims.
