The Road to Calvary is a Russian historical drama television series based on the novel of the same name by Alexei Tolstoy. The show is set in Russia during World War I and the Russian Revolution, where two sisters, played by Viktoria Isakova and Yulia Snigir, are caught up in the turmoil of the times.

The series begins in 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I. The two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha, come from a wealthy family and lead a comfortable life in St. Petersburg. Tatiana is a talented artist, while Dasha is more interested in politics and social justice. When war breaks out, Tatiana marries a soldier, while Dasha becomes involved with revolutionaries and eventually marries a Bolshevik.

As the war continues, the sisters become increasingly involved in the political and social upheaval of the times. Tatiana becomes disenchanted with her comfortable life and begins to question the war and the government's policies. Dasha, on the other hand, becomes more radicalized and begins to participate in revolutionary activities.

As the war comes to an end and the Bolsheviks take control of the country, the sisters find themselves on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Tatiana struggles to reconcile her love for her husband, who is serving in the White Army, with her growing disillusionment with the government. Dasha, meanwhile, rises through the ranks of the Bolsheviks and becomes a powerful figure in the new government.

The series is notable for its impressive production values, which recreate the period with great attention to detail. The costumes and sets are particularly impressive, and the cinematography captures the beauty and horror of the era.

The acting is also strong across the board, with Leonid Bichevin and Andrey Merzlikin delivering standout performances as Tatiana's and Dasha's respective husbands. Viktoria Isakova and Yulia Snigir are also excellent as the sisters, conveying the complex emotional journey each of them goes through over the course of the series.

One of the strengths of the series is its exploration of the complex political and social issues of the era. The Road to Calvary doesn't shy away from the brutality and violence of the times, while also conveying the hope and idealism that drove many of the revolutionaries.

Overall, The Road to Calvary is a beautifully produced and engrossing drama that offers a compelling look at a pivotal moment in Russian history. With strong performances and a gripping story, it's a must-watch for fans of historical drama.
