Lucas McCain, a widower and former Union Army sharpshooter, lives in the town of North Fork with his young son Mark. In season two episode 32, titled "The Fourflusher," Lucas and Mark become involved in an unusual situation when they befriend a drifter named George Vale. Vale is a likable, charismatic man who quickly wins over the townspeople with his charm and wit.
However, Lucas is suspicious of Vale's motives and learns that he is a professional gambler who has cheated his way into the town's good graces. Vale is a "four-flusher," a term used to describe a person who pretends to have more wealth or ability than they actually possess. Lucas believes that Vale is up to something, but he cannot figure out exactly what it is.
Despite Lucas's warning, the townspeople continue to trust Vale, and he becomes a hero when he helps to rescue a group of stranded miners. However, Lucas discovers that Vale has cheated the miners out of their claim and intends to sell it for a profit. Lucas must find a way to stop Vale before he takes advantage of the miners and leaves North Fork with their money.
As the episode progresses, Lucas becomes more and more determined to stop Vale, despite the fact that many members of the town are still convinced of Vale's good intentions. Lucas is able to use his skills as a sharpshooter to convince the townspeople that Vale is a fraud and that they should not trust him.
Ultimately, Lucas is able to save the miners and protect the town from Vale's scheming ways. However, the episode ends on a bittersweet note, as Lucas realizes that sometimes the people you trust the most can be the ones who betray you.
Overall, "The Fourflusher" is a classic episode of The Rifleman that highlights the show's focus on strong moral values, family values, and the importance of standing up for what is right. The show is notable for its excellent performances, especially by lead actor Chuck Connors, who brings a depth and complexity to the role of Lucas McCain. The episode is also well-paced and full of suspense, as Lucas races against the clock to save the town from Vale's devious plan.
