Lucas McCain must protect his town of North Fork in this thrilling and action-packed episode from season two of The Rifleman. Titled "Smoke Screen," this episode follows Lucas as he attempts to stop a group of bandits who have been terrorizing the town.

The episode begins with Lucas and his son Mark spending time together when they notice a group of men entering North Fork. Lucas quickly recognizes them as a group of notorious bandits who have been causing trouble throughout the region. He knows he must act quickly to protect his town.

Lucas tries to rally the town to prepare for an attack, but many of the citizens are hesitant to take action. Some are frightened by the bandits' reputation, while others believe that it is not their problem to solve. Lucas is determined to defend his home, however, and begins to form a plan.

Meanwhile, the bandits are not content to leave without causing chaos. They begin to set fires around the town as a distraction, forcing Lucas and the other citizens to divide their attention between fighting the fires and preparing for an attack. With the smoke and chaos, the bandits are able to move about the town more freely, allowing them to cause even more damage.

Lucas and Mark do their best to put out the fires and keep the bandits at bay, but it seems like they are fighting a losing battle. Just when all seems lost, Lucas gets an idea. He realizes that the bandits are using the smoke from the fires as a way to hide their movements. If he can create another source of smoke, he may be able to confuse them and gain the upper hand.

Lucas quickly musters the town's resources and begins to create a massive smoke screen around the perimeter of North Fork. He knows that this will not stop the bandits completely, but it may give them the opportunity they need to take the bandits by surprise.

The episode reaches a climax as the bandits launch their final attack on the town. The town is ready for them, however, and they are able to hold their ground. With the help of the smoke screen, Lucas and the other citizens are able to disorient the bandits, causing them to become confused and disorganized. This gives the town the opportunity it needs to push them back and finally defeat them.

As the episode comes to a close, the town of North Fork is safe once again. Lucas and Mark survey the damage done by the fires and the bandits, taking stock of what they have lost. But despite the destruction, they are grateful to be alive and to have protected their home.

In "Smoke Screen," the show explores themes of community, courage, and the importance of standing up for what is right. Through the character of Lucas McCain, viewers are reminded of the power of determination and the impact that one person can have on a community. With its thrilling action sequences and engaging storyline, this episode is a standout in the second season of The Rifleman.
