In The Purge season 1 episode 4, titled "Release the Beast," tensions continue to rise as the annual Purge looms closer. The episode follows several characters as they prepare for the night and deal with the consequences of past Purges.
Miguel, who is on a mission to find his sister Penelope, has teamed up with Pete, a driver who knows the ins and outs of the Purge. They come across a group of young adults who are preparing to "release the beast" on Purge night, meaning they plan on indulging in the most violent and depraved behavior possible. Miguel and Pete try to intervene, but the group is determined to carry out their plans.
Meanwhile, Penelope is still in the cult-like Purge-worshipping organization run by Good Leader Tavis. She begins to question their beliefs and practices, but Tavis and her followers are not receptive to any dissent. Penelope's friend Lila, who is also in the organization, tries to help her escape.
Jane, a successful executive, is struggling with the guilt of her involvement in a company that profits from the Purge. She is haunted by the memories of a past Purge where she witnessed the death of an innocent man. Her husband, who is wheelchair-bound and relies on the protection of their high-tech security system, urges her to confront her guilt and make amends.
Finally, Rick and Jenna, a wealthy couple who have barricaded themselves in their home with their daughter, face a moral dilemma when a man in need of medical attention shows up at their door. They must decide whether to let him in and risk their safety, or turn him away and live with the guilt of abandoning him on the most dangerous night of the year.
Throughout the episode, the themes of guilt, morality, and human nature are explored as the characters confront the chaos and violence of the Purge. As tensions reach a boiling point, the stage is set for a dramatic and explosive Purge night.
