The Proud Family follows the life of 14-year-old Penny Proud, an African American teenager navigating adolescence with her family and friends in her hometown of Wizardville. In season 1 episode 9, titled "Teacher's Pet," Penny and her classmates are given a new substitute teacher, Mr. Hightower, who quickly becomes popular amongst the students for his fun and engaging teaching methods.
However, Penny becomes suspicious of Mr. Hightower when he starts showing up at her family's house unannounced, claiming to want to get to know them better. Penny's dad, Oscar, is thrilled to have a new friend and doesn't see any issue with Mr. Hightower's behavior. But Penny starts to investigate Mr. Hightower's past and discovers that he has been fired from numerous schools for inappropriate behavior with students.
Penny tries to warn her family and classmates about Mr. Hightower's behavior, but no one believes her. She then takes matters into her own hands and sets up a trap to catch Mr. Hightower in the act. Her plan ultimately reveals the truth and Mr. Hightower is removed from his teaching position.
Meanwhile, Penny's best friend, Dijonay, tries to catch the attention of the school's star athlete and heartthrob, Sticky, by pretending to be a talented athlete herself. However, her lies catch up with her when she has to participate in a relay race and proves to be a terrible runner.
With its relatable characters and themes of adolescence, The Proud Family is a beloved animated series that aired from 2001-2005. "Teacher's Pet" tackles important issues such as trust, boundaries, and the importance of speaking up. It also showcases the strong bond between Penny and her family, who ultimately help her catch the dangerous Mr. Hightower.
