The Practice season 1 episode 12, titled "Sex, Lies, & Monkeys," begins with Bobby Donnell (Dylan McDermott) representing a woman who was accused of killing her husband. The prosecution argues that the woman had a motive to kill her husband as he was having an extramarital affair with her best friend. However, Bobby argues that the jury cannot convict his client based solely on a motive.
Meanwhile, Eugene Young (Steve Harris) represents a young man who was accused of stealing a monkey from a laboratory. The case takes an unexpected turn when it is revealed that the monkey was actually stolen by the young man's girlfriend, who wanted to use it for her own scientific experiments.
As the two cases unfold, tensions rise at the law firm. Lindsay Dole (Kelli Williams) becomes increasingly frustrated with Bobby's constant womanizing, and their relationship becomes strained. Meanwhile, Rebecca Washington (Lisa Gay Hamilton) is forced to confront her own prejudices when she represents a white supremacist who has been accused of assault.
As the episode comes to a close, the two cases reach their verdicts. Bobby's client is found not guilty, while Eugene's client is sentenced to probation. The aftermath of the cases leaves the lawyers at the firm reeling with the psychological toll of their work.
