Tom the Builder's son, Alfred, has grown into a young man who is eager to learn from his father's accomplishments. He has the desire to impress his father and the skills to become a great builder, but his temperament can be his downfall. As he struggles to impress his father, he also struggles with his feelings for Aliena, who is betrothed to Lord William.

Meanwhile, Martha has captured the attention of the evil Bishop Waleran, who is convinced that she is a witch. He sends Brother Remigius to find proof of Martha's witchcraft, leading to a confrontation between Brother Remigius and Tom's son Alfred.

Aliena, struggling with her own emotions, finds herself torn between her loyalty to her father, the Earl of Shiring, and her growing love for Jack. She confides in her brother, Richard, who tries to help her decide what to do.

As tensions rise in the town of Kingsbridge, a severe storm hits, causing destruction and chaos. In the aftermath of the storm, the fate of Kingsbridge and its citizens rests on the skills of Tom, Alfred, Jack, and Aliena. Will they be able to work together and rebuild the town, or will their conflicting emotions and desires tear them apart?
