- February 11, 1972
The Partridge Family season 2 episode 20, "Hel-l-l-p," follows the musical family as they try to help their depressed neighbor, a recluse named Mr. Botkin. When Mr. Botkin's phone line is accidentally cut, he becomes stranded and starts to lose his grip on reality. The family tries to keep him occupied by inviting him over for dinner and playing music with him, but he starts to become more and more withdrawn.
Meanwhile, Danny and Keith are trying to come up with a new song for the group, but they can't seem to find any inspiration. They decide to take a break and go out for a drive, but their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. They're forced to hitch a ride with a group of nuns who are on their way to a convent retreat.
Back at the house, the rest of the family is trying to figure out what to do about Mr. Botkin. They decide to throw a surprise party for him, hoping that it will lift his spirits. They invite all of his old friends and neighbors, but Mr. Botkin doesn't show up. The family starts to worry and decides to go over to his house to check on him.
When they arrive, they find that Mr. Botkin has barricaded himself inside his house and is refusing to come out. Shirley tries to talk to him through the door, but he's not interested in talking. The family starts to get desperate and decides to try a more unconventional approach.
They enlist the help of a group of hippies who are passing through town. The hippies are able to connect with Mr. Botkin in a way that the family can't, and they're able to convince him to come out of his house. The family is overjoyed and they all play music together in Mr. Botkin's backyard.
As the episode comes to a close, Danny and Keith return from their adventure with the nuns. They've found their inspiration for a new song and they excitedly share it with the rest of the family. The Partridge Family ends the episode with a musical performance, as they often do, and everyone is happy and content.
Overall, "Hel-l-l-p" is a heartwarming episode that deals with issues of depression and isolation. The Partridge Family's willingness to go to great lengths to help their neighbor shows just how much they care about those in their community. The addition of the hippies adds a fun and unexpected twist to the episode, and the musical performances tie it all together nicely.
