The OA Season 1 Episode 4 "Away" opens with Prairie still struggling to find her place in the world. She has returned to her parents' home but she is not ready to deal with all of the emotions which their home brings up. As she spends a lot of time alone in her dark bedroom, she starts to have a vision of a corridor leading to a mysterious door. She cannot shake this vision and decides to explore it.
Prairie's vision leads her to an abandoned house where she discovers a secret room. In this room, Prairie comes across a group of people who have found their own unique ways to cope with their own personal tragedies. They all have their own rituals, their own ways of making sense of the world. Prairie is drawn to their sense of community and she tries to befriend them.
As Prairie begins to join in with the group, she begins to see the world in a new light. They help her to see that her experiences have not just been for her own sake but that they are part of a greater whole. Prairie begins to understand that what she has gone through has contributed to something greater than just her own personal tragedy. The group helps her to understand that her experiences can help others who are also struggling with their own personal demons.
As Prairie continues to integrate with the group, she starts to feel a sense of liberation. She starts to reclaim the power that she felt she had lost during her ordeal and she begins to take back control of her life. She starts to grasp the hidden beauty and sense of joy in the world.
Overall, "Away" is a powerful episode that shows the effect of community and the importance of finding one's own way to cope with adversity. The episode is a great illustration of how even the most traumatic experiences can be transformed into something beautiful. The OA Season 1 Episode 4 "Away" is definitely one of the standout episodes of this season and is not to be missed.
