The OA season 1 episode 1 is called "Homecoming" and it follows Prairie Johnson, a young woman who has been missing for seven years and suddenly returns to her hometown in Missouri. She was blind when she went missing, but now her sight has been restored and she has scars all over her back.
The episode starts with Prairie waking up in a hospital bed after being found wandering on a bridge. She is nervous and confused, and when the nurse tells her she is in Missouri, she becomes overwhelmed with emotion. Prairie asks for her parents, but they are nowhere to be found. Instead, she is met by the FBI, who are interested in her disappearance. However, Prairie refuses to speak to them and is only interested in finding her way back home.
We then meet Prairie's adoptive parents, Nancy and Abel Johnson, who are overjoyed at her return. However, they quickly realize that Prairie is not the same girl they lost seven years ago. She is guarded and distant, and doesn't want to talk about where she has been or what has happened to her. Nancy and Abel are worried about her, but are unsure how to help.
Throughout the episode, we see flashbacks to Prairie's time away. She is living in a basement with three other people - Steve, Buck, and French - and is working with them to figure out how to open a portal to another dimension. Steve is skeptical of the plan, but Buck and French are more open to the idea. Prairie tells them that she needs to find someone in that other dimension, and that she believes they can bring that person back to this world.
As Prairie tries to adjust to her new life back home, she struggles with PTSD and flashbacks to her time in captivity. She is haunted by the memories of the people she left behind in the other dimension, and is desperate to find a way back to them. Nancy and Abel try to get her help, but Prairie is resistant to any kind of therapy or medication.
In the final moments of the episode, Prairie finally opens up to a group of people she meets in an abandoned house. She tells them about her experiences in the other dimension, and the group seems to believe her. They ask her to share her story with others, and she agrees.
Overall, "Homecoming" sets up a mysterious and intriguing world full of questions. Who was Prairie with in the other dimension? What happened to her while she was gone? And how will she move forward now that she's home? It's a captivating episode that leaves the audience eager for more.
