The Next Step is a Canadian teen drama television series that follows the lives of the dancers at The Next Step Dance Studio. Season 6 Episode 5 is titled "Run This Town". In this episode, the dancers are preparing for the upcoming dance competition in London.
The episode opens with the team starting their day with a vigorous workout. Everyone is feeling the pressure as the competition is drawing near. With the final date being just a week away, everyone is scrambling to get their routines perfect. Noah, Ozzy, and Kingston are chosen by Emily, the dance captain, to compete in a hip-hop trio. They are thrilled at the opportunity and start rehearsing immediately.
Amanda, one of the dancers, is feeling left out and frustrated with her progress. She confides in Richelle, who advises her to talk to Emily. When Amanda speaks with Emily, she is given a chance to choreograph a trio with Richelle and Lola. Amanda is excited at the opportunity, but the pressure to come up with a winning routine proves challenging.
Tensions start to rise between the dance captain Emily and the studio owner Miss Kate, as they disagree on what is best for the team. Emily feels that the team needs to focus more on innovative and contemporary routines, while Miss Kate believes that they need more classical pieces in their repertoire. This causes a rift between the two, with other members of the team taking sides.
During practice, Lola injures her ankle and is unable to perform. This puts the trio in jeopardy, causing Amanda to feel even more pressure. After a while, she comes up with a new routine that is well received by the rest of the team. Lola’s injury forces Emily to make a hard decision as to who will replace her. After deliberation, Emily chooses Richelle, as she thinks she would be the best fit for the routine, despite Lola’s protests.
The team heads to London for the competition. On the day of the competition, the team is feeling the pressure and nerves set in, as they take the stage. Amanda’s trio performs a beautiful and well-executed routine, earning a high score from the judges. Noah, Ozzy, and Kingston’s hip-hop trio is a smash hit with the crowd, receiving a standing ovation.
As the team waits for the results, tension mounts between Emily and Miss Kate. This causes Emily to question whether she wants to remain the dance captain after the competition. When the results are finally announced, the team is thrilled to find out that they have won first place in their category. Everyone is ecstatic, as they celebrate and cheer for each other.
The episode ends with Emily still struggling with her role as dance captain. She confides in her friend and fellow dancer Michelle, seeking advice on what to do. Michelle tells her that she needs to trust her instincts and speak up for what she believes in, knowing that the team is counting on her. Emily takes Michelle’s advice to heart and resolves to have a frank conversation with Miss Kate.
Overall, the episode "Run This Town" is filled with tension and drama. The pressure to perform well is high, causing the dancers to second-guess themselves and their routines. With so much at stake, even the smallest mistake can be life-altering. Despite all the ups and downs, the team pulls through and emerges victorious, pushing ourselves to be better and more innovative dancers.
