In The Nanny season 2 episode 5, titled Curse of the Grandmas, Fran Fine (played by Fran Drescher) finds herself caught in the middle of a family feud when both her maternal and paternal grandmothers come to visit her at the same time.
To start things off, Fran's maternal grandmother Yetta (played by Ann Morgan Guilbert), who lives at a retirement home, accidentally breaks a "spirit stick" that was given to her by a Native American tribe's medicine man. The stick is said to have magical powers that bring good luck, but now that it is broken, a curse has been placed upon their family.
Meanwhile, Fran's paternal grandmother Rose (played by Renée Taylor) arrives, and as expected, clashes with Yetta, leading to a war of insults between the two grandmas. To resolve the tension, Fran suggests they all go out for dinner at a fancy restaurant, but things quickly go awry when Rose becomes convinced that the curse is real and that she is the next victim.
As the evening wears on, both grandmas become more and more convinced that they are cursed, and blame each other for the misfortunes that befall them. Fran tries to intervene and calm them down but her efforts are in vain. Eventually, the tension reaches a breaking point when Rose starts to choke on her food, and Yetta realizes that she is the only one who can save her. Despite their differences, Yetta performs the Heimlich maneuver on Rose and dislodges the food from her throat, thereby saving her life.
This act of bravery on Yetta's part causes both grandmas to put their differences aside and make amends with each other. They realize that the curse was all in their heads and that they need to focus on the love and support they have for each other. The episode ends with the two grandmas sharing a heartfelt embrace, while Fran looks on with pride and relief.
Overall, Curse of the Grandmas is a fun and engaging episode that showcases the comedic talents of the talented cast. The contrast between the two grandmas, and their differing personalities, is a major highlight, and the resolution of the conflict is both heartwarming and satisfying.
