Fran Fine, the newly hired nanny, is settling in with the Sheffield family. However, she finds herself at odds with Mr. Sheffield's mother, Yetta, who constantly undermines her authority with the children. As Fran tries to establish some boundaries, she also learns the family's secrets and tries to help them deal with their issues.
In this episode, titled "Smoke Gets in Your Lies," Fran is trying to impress Mr. Sheffield's business partner, who is coming to dinner. She wants everything to be perfect, but when Niles, the butler, sets off the smoke alarm and the fire department shows up, things start to go awry.
To make matters worse, Mr. Sheffield's children, Brighton and Grace, are caught smoking by their grandmother, who threatens to tell their father. Fran steps in and convinces Yetta to let her handle the situation. She tells the children that she used to smoke and understands why they would want to, but that it's not a good idea. She also agrees not to tell their father, as long as they promise to stop smoking.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sheffield's business partner, who is a health nut, arrives and is less than impressed with the smoking incident. He is also put off by Fran's cooking, which includes a lot of butter and cream. Fran tries to make it up to him by making some healthy snacks and even tries to get him to do some exercises with her, but he is not interested.
As the night goes on, Fran tries to keep everything under control, but it only gets worse. Fran is left to clean up the mess and salvage the evening, but in the end, she manages to impress the business partner with her honesty and heart.
