In 2015, ABC premiered The Muppets, a revival of the classic Jim Henson puppet variety show featuring everyone's favorite felt characters. The show was produced by Bill Prady (co-creator of The Big Bang Theory) along with Bob Kushell and Randall Einhorn, and starred veteran Muppet performer Bill Barretta, who played several of the series' popular characters including Rowlf the Dog, Dr. Teeth, Pepe the King Prawn, and Swedish Chef.
The show was set up as a mockumentary-style look at the behind-the-scenes antics of Miss Piggy's late-night talk show, "Up Late with Miss Piggy", as well as the personal lives of the Muppets themselves. Kermit the Frog was the Executive Producer of the show, and the rest of the characters held various roles within the program, such as Fozzie Bear as the head writer, and Gonzo as the head of the art department.
The show featured a variety of celebrity guest stars including Elizabeth Banks, Josh Groban, and Reese Witherspoon, as well as several musical performances from Imagine Dragons and OK Go. One of the funniest recurring gags was the presence of Statler and Waldorf, the Muppet hecklers who sat in the balcony and continued to make snarky comments about the show and performers.
Throughout the course of the show's first and only season, it focused on several storylines, both humorous and emotional. Among the best was the budding romance between Fozzie and his ideal match, a young woman who turned out to be a human named Becky. Another great episode featured the Muppets taking over a late-night show from another network, which resulted in hilarity and chaos.
The Muppets also dealt with some darker themes, such as the breakdown of Kermit and Piggy's relationship, and the final episode saw the cast of puppets work together to save the show from being canceled. Despite efforts to rejuvenate the show's ratings, ABC ultimately decided not to renew it for a second season.
All in all, The Muppets was a fun and nostalgic take on a classic franchise, updating it for modern audiences while remaining true to the spirit of the original. Although it only lasted for one season, it will always hold a special place in the hearts of Muppet fans of all ages.
