The Moody family is anything but average. In FOX's comedy series "The Moodys," viewers get an inside look at the dysfunctional family's everyday lives as they navigate the ups and downs of their relationships. The show follows their struggles and their triumphs, all while painting a hilarious picture of what it's like to live with family.
The head of the Moody family is Sean Moody Sr. (played by Denis Leary), a cantankerous, no-nonsense patriarch who is prone to fits of anger. Next in line is Sean Jr. (Jay Baruchel), a 30-something musician who struggles to find his place in the world. Then there's Ann (Elizabeth Perkins), the middle child and only daughter, who is recently divorced and trying to figure out her love life. The youngest child, Dan (Francois Arnaud), is a hotshot lawyer who has trouble getting along with his siblings.
The show kicks off during Christmas time when Sean Sr. surprises the family by announcing he's selling the house and moving to Florida with his new girlfriend. This sudden change throws the family into chaos, forcing them to confront their issues and come to terms with the fact that they're growing older and drifting apart.
Over the course of the series, viewers watch as the Moody family deals with a variety of issues, from romantic entanglements and career struggles to family feuds and uncomfortable holiday dinners. Along the way, they're joined by a cast of colorful characters, including Sean Sr.'s best friend and Ann's ex-husband, Roger (Josh Segarra), and Sean Jr.'s quirky girlfriend, Cora (Maria Gabriela de Faria).
One of the show's strengths is its ability to balance the poignant moments with plenty of humor. While the Moodys may be dysfunctional, they're also incredibly relatable in that they're just trying to figure it all out like everyone else. Whether it's Sean Jr. singing a mournful song about his lack of direction in life or Ann awkwardly attempting to flirt with a new love interest, there's always a hilarious moment waiting around the corner.
The show also excels at capturing the spirit of family gatherings. Anyone who has spent time with their own family during the holidays will recognize the tense dinners, the passive-aggressive comments, and the awkward moments that make up a family gathering. While the Moodys may take things to the extreme, their experiences will resonate with anyone who has ever had to navigate the complexities of a family dynamic.
While "The Moodys" only lasted for two seasons, it left a lasting impression on audiences. The show may be over, but its legacy lives on as a hilarious and heartwarming depiction of the intricacies of family life. Fans of the show will no doubt continue to re-watch it for years to come, taking comfort in the fact that even the most dysfunctional families can find their way back to each other.
The Moodys is a series that ran for 2 seasons (14 episodes) between December 4, 2019 and on FOX
