The Mist, a television drama horror series, is a creation of Christian Thorpe and Amanda Segel. It is based on the Stephen King novella of the same name. The show premiered on Spike TV on June 22, 2017, and ran for only one season. The Mist is set in Bridgeville, Maine, a small town that is shrouded in a deadly and strange mist that soon ignites paranoia and chaos among residents who are trapped within its confines.

The show follows a diverse cast of characters, including Eve Copeland (Alyssa Sutherland), a teacher and the mother of a teenager, Alex Copeland (Gus Birney), dealing with severe social anxiety. Other main characters include Kevin Copeland (Morgan Spector), Eve's husband, a local sports coach, Nathalie Raven (Frances Conroy), a resident of the town who is also a spiritual healer, and Adrian Garf (Russell Posner), a local teenager who is struggling with his sexual orientation.

In the pilot episode, the story begins with a group of soldiers stationed at the Arrowhead military base, situated in Bridgeville. Things start getting bizarre when a scientist's experiment goes awry, causing a horrific fog to drift towards the town. Soon after, the base is shut down, and everyone is forced to evacuate. However, not all military personnel make it out in time.

At the same time, an Eaton Mall manager, Gus Redman (Darren Pettie) and his staff find themselves trapped inside the mall as the mist descends upon the city. The various characters find themselves in different scenarios and circumstances, which leads to fear and panic. Nathalie Raven, informed through her dreams and visions, suggests the mist is concealing a door to another dimension, which brings otherworldly creatures into their world.

The Mist is much more than just a horror show; it delves deeply into the complexities of human behavior when a community is faced with extreme adversity. The sinister and mysterious events inside the mist test the town residents, revealing their true natures, with a dose of psychological horror.

The show's midpoint introduces us to Jonah Dixon (Okezie Morro), a soldier who survived the Arrowhead base incident. He feels guilty for his role and for letting another lab assistant die. He feels compelled to use the mist as an opportunity to redeem himself. On the other hand, Alex and her friends are hiding at the mall's loading bay, hoping to avoid the chaos outside. Inside is a survivalist, named Jay Heisel (Luke Cosgrove) and his mother, and they both try to recruit Alex's group. She is certain that her father is still alive, and they embark on a dangerous mission to rescue him.

The show explores the fear of the unknown, asking what could happen if our most insidious and dark impulses get the better of us in times of crisis. The small town residents must come to terms with their humanity, morals, and the kind of world they want to create, all while fighting for their lives.

The series, which sadly only ran for one season, is a masterclass in tension-building and, like the novella, is an intense character study. It uses its talented cast to its full potential, showing how survival instincts, hope, guilt, and desperation can bring out the best and worst in people.

In the wake of recent disaster stories like Ozark, The Rain, and The Walking Dead, The Mist does an excellent job of keeping the audience engaged in a fresh way, exploring how humanity would realistically react while maintaining an air of mystery and suspense.

The Mist is an expertly crafted horror TV series that will leave you feeling agitated and disturbed, producing unexpectedly satisfying twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up to the final credits.

The Mist is a series that ran for 1 seasons (10 episodes) between June 22, 2017 and on Spike TV
