In season 2, episode 5 entitled Sahara, Romesh travels to the vast desert of Sahara in North Africa. Known as the world's largest hot desert, the Sahara spans over 3.6 million square miles across 11 countries including Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan, Tunisia, and Chad.
Starting his journey in Marrakesh, Morocco, Romesh sets out to navigate the desert terrain with the help of a local guide. He rides on a camel, which provides him with a bumpy and uncomfortable experience, but it's all part of the adventure. Romesh visits a traditional Berber village, where he learns about the culture and way of life of the indigenous people who have called the Sahara their home for centuries.
He also has the opportunity to meet and dine with a nomadic family, who have been wandering the desert for generations. Romesh is fascinated by their resilience and resourcefulness in the harsh and unforgiving environment. He even tries his hand at milking a goat, a task that proves to be much more difficult than he anticipated.
As Romesh continues his journey into the heart of the Sahara, he encounters a group of musicians who are passionate about preserving the traditional music of the region. They perform for Romesh in a cave, and he marvels at their talent and enthusiasm.
Throughout his travels, Romesh discovers the challenges faced by the people who call the Sahara home, including climate change and political instability. But he is also inspired by their resilience and their unwavering spirit.
In the end, Romesh leaves the Sahara with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the desert. Through his misadventures, he has gained a deeper understanding of what it means to live in such a harsh and challenging environment, and the incredible ways in which the people of the Sahara have adapted to make it their home.
