The Middle season 9 episode 20, titled "Great Heckspectations," follows the Heck family as they deal with some major life changes. As the episode begins, Axl faces the reality of moving away from home for a new job, which brings mixed emotions for his parents and siblings. Frankie tries to stay positive and supportive of her firstborn, but struggles to hold back her tears as she confronts the fact that her son is leaving the nest. Meanwhile, Sue is determined to finish her final exams and graduate college, but finds herself struggling with the daunting task of studying for four different tests at once. With the help of her family, Sue manages to work through her anxiety and push herself to succeed.
As Axl prepares to leave, tensions rise between him and his younger brother, Brick, who is still adjusting to Axl's absence and the prospect of being the only child left at home. Mike attempts to intervene and smooth things over, but Brick's stubbornness and Axl's impatience lead to a heated argument between the two brothers. Ultimately, however, Axl makes amends with Brick and the Heck family as a whole, offering heartfelt goodbyes and promises to stay in touch.
Meanwhile, Frankie struggles with what to do with Axl's old room, which has been a constant source of frustration for her in the past. Though she initially considers turning it into a private sanctuary for her own relaxation, she ultimately decides to leave the room as is, as a way of keeping Axl close to her heart. The episode ends with the entire Heck family coming together for a final group hug, as they prepare to face the next chapter of their lives together, but apart.
