In The Middle season 5 episode 3, entitled "The Potato," the Heck family finds themselves in a bit of a predicament when a potato that they grew in their backyard has grown to an enormous size.
Frankie (played by Patricia Heaton) sees the potato as an opportunity to win a local contest for the biggest potato, but the rest of her family is less than thrilled about her obsession with the vegetable. Meanwhile, Brick (played by Atticus Shaffer) is struggling to write a paper on the Revolutionary War, and Axl (played by Charlie McDermott) tries to bond with his new boss.
As the family tries to figure out what to do with the giant potato, they start to become more divided. Frankie becomes fixated on winning the contest, while Mike (played by Neil Flynn) and the kids start to see her obsession as a bit ridiculous. Brick struggles with his paper and turns to Sue (played by Eden Sher) for help, which leads to some hilarious moments between the siblings.
Axl's attempts to bond with his boss don't go exactly as planned, and he ends up getting himself into some trouble at work. Meanwhile, Frankie's obsession with the potato leads to some unexpected consequences that force her to reevaluate her priorities.
