The Middle season 3 episode 3, titled "Major Changes," follows the Heck family as they navigate significant transformations in their lives. The episode opens with Frankie and Mike discovering that their daughter, Sue, has decided to quit the cross country team due to her lack of progress. While Frankie initially brushes off Sue's departure, Mike recognizes the significance of the decision and attempts to convince Sue to stay on the team.
Meanwhile, Brick is struggling to adjust to middle school and his new teacher, Mr. Devereaux. Mr. Devereaux's strict teaching methods and lack of leniency are a stark contrast to Brick's previous experience with teachers, and he struggles to keep up with the workload. As a result, he turns to his parents for help, but they are unable to provide the guidance he needs.
As both Sue and Brick struggle with their respective changes, Axl finds himself thrust into a position of responsibility when his boss at the movie theater promotes him to shift manager. Though Axl initially relishes the opportunity, he quickly becomes overwhelmed by the duties of the job and begins to crumble under the pressure.
Throughout the episode, the Heck family must confront the challenges that come with change, and must rely on each other to navigate these difficult times.
