The Mick season 2 episode 2 opens with the Pemberton kids gearing up for their first day of school. Mickey, who desperately needs to find a new job now that her brief stint as a janitor has ended, takes up the task of making sure they all get there on time. But as soon as the school day starts, things take a turn for the worse.
Sabrina, the Pemberton's favorite teacher, announces that she's leaving the school for a study abroad program and the kids are devastated. Determined to find a new teacher the kids will love just as much as Sabrina, Mickey takes it upon herself to help with the search. She quickly realizes she's in over her head, as she has no idea how to go about finding a teacher for her niece and nephews.
Enter Alex, a new kid at school who seems like the perfect fit for the Pemberton crew. He's funny, outgoing, and genuinely interested in what they have to say. But as Mickey and Alba notice a little too late, something about Alex doesn't quite add up, and they start to suspect he's hiding something.
Meanwhile, Jimmy attempts to start a career as a singer after a chance meeting with a music producer, but quickly learns that it's not as easy as he thought it would be. He enlists the help of Ben to make a music video, but things take a turn for the weird when the two run into a group of friends who seem more interested in causing trouble than helping Jimmy accomplish his dream.
As the episode progresses, Mickey's suspicions about Alex only grow stronger, and she's determined to get to the bottom of what he's hiding. But the more she tries to dig, the more resistance she faces, leading her to question whether her instincts are right or if she's just being paranoid.
In the end, everything comes to a head during a class science project, where Mickey finally gets to the bottom of what Alex has been hiding. But the discovery comes with some unexpected consequences, leaving Mickey wondering if she made the right choice by getting involved in the first place.
The Friend is a hilarious, fast-paced episode of The Mick that explores themes of trust, deception, and loyalty. As always, Kaitlin Olson is a standout as the rough-around-the-edges Mickey, who shows us that even the most unconventional of guardians can be capable of love and sacrifice. With great performances from the rest of the cast, including Sofia Black-D'Elia as Sabrina and Thomas Barbusca as Chip, The Friend is a must-watch episode for fans of the show.
