Mary Richards has always been a hard worker and has always taken pride in her job as a news producer for WJM-TV in Minneapolis. However, she finds herself in a difficult position when she is falsely accused of inciting a riot during a protest at a shopping mall. Mary is taken into custody and booked by the police, leaving her feeling embarrassed and ashamed.
As she awaits her trial, Mary decides that she needs to hire a lawyer to represent her in court. At first, she considers representing herself but soon realizes that she is in way over her head. She turns to a lawyer named Ed LaSalle for help, and he agrees to take her case.
Ed is a no-nonsense lawyer who does not tolerate any nonsense or foolishness. He tells Mary that she needs to take her case seriously and that she needs to start preparing for her trial immediately. Mary is initially intimidated by Ed's strict demeanor, but she soon realizes that he is the right person to represent her in court.
Together, Mary and Ed begin preparing for her trial. They review all of the evidence against her and start to develop a strategy for her defense. Ed is hard on Mary, pushing her to be her best, but he also shows her a softer side when she feels overwhelmed and scared.
Meanwhile, Mary's coworkers at WJM-TV are concerned about her and rally around her in support. Lou, Murray, and Ted all try to help Mary in their own way. Lou tries to find evidence that will prove Mary's innocence, while Murray and Ted try to boost her morale with jokes and funny stories.
As the trial approaches, Mary becomes more and more nervous. She worries that she will be found guilty and that her reputation will be ruined forever. Ed tries to reassure her and tells her to trust in the justice system.
Finally, the day of the trial arrives. Mary, Ed, and the prosecutors present their respective cases to the judge and jury. Mary is nervous as she listens to the evidence being presented against her, but Ed does a masterful job of refuting their arguments and presenting evidence that supports Mary's innocence.
In the end, the jury delivers their verdict – not guilty. Mary is ecstatic, relieved that her name has been cleared. She thanks Ed for all of his hard work and dedication in defending her in court.
As the episode ends, Mary returns to work at WJM-TV with a newfound sense of confidence and pride. She knows that she has been through a difficult ordeal, but she has come out on top. Her coworkers celebrate her victory, and Mary basks in their praise and admiration.
