After dating several boring men, Mary Richards begins to feel like she needs to find someone who is more attractive. When she meets a handsome construction worker named Bill, Mary is immediately smitten. However, when she invites him to a party at one of her friend's apartments, Mary begins to worry that Bill might be too pretty for her. As the night wears on, Mary starts to become increasingly uncomfortable with the attention that Bill is receiving, causing her to wonder if she should be dating someone who is more ordinary looking. Meanwhile, Lou and Murray try to negotiate a salary increase for Mary, but their efforts are hampered by the station's tight budget. As Mary struggles to come to terms with her feelings for Bill and her sense of self-worth, she begins to wonder if she is capable of finding true love.
