Mary Richards is excited to have her dear friend Joanna visit her in Minneapolis from New York. However, when she arrives, Mary is shocked to find out that Joanna is going through a divorce and is struggling to start over. Despite her own busy work schedule, Mary dedicates her time to helping Joanna find a job and get back on her feet. Meanwhile, Lou Grant tries to bond with his daughter, who comes to visit him from California. Lou experiences a difficult time trying to connect with his daughter, who is more interested in exploring the city on her own. Elsewhere, Ted Baxter gets a new job opportunity but struggles to keep his excitement under control. He tries to keep it a secret from his colleagues, fearing he will jinx the opportunity. Meanwhile, Murray Slaughter is put in charge of organizing the office Christmas party, but his lack of creativity leads to a lackluster event. With the help of Mary, he manages to pull it off, but not without some mishaps along the way. As the episode progresses, Mary realizes that true friends are always there to lend a helping hand, no matter what challenges they may be facing.
