Mary Richards, a spunky and independent single woman, is settling into her new job as a producer for WJM-TV's Six O'Clock News. In this episode, titled "The Square-Shaped Room," Mary has just moved into a new apartment and is excited to show it off to her friends.
As Mary gives her friends a tour of her new place, they can't help but notice that the living room is a perfect square - a feature that the previous tenant had used to decorate the room in an unusual way. The walls are painted in various shades of green and yellow, and there are bizarre angles and shapes throughout the space.
Mary's friends are split on whether they like the room or not, but Mary is determined to make it work. However, her determination is tested when she realizes that the odd shape of the room is making it difficult to arrange her furniture in a way that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Meanwhile, Lou Grant, the gruff newsroom boss who has taken a liking to Mary, is struggling with his relationship with his teenage son. The two of them can't seem to find common ground, and Lou is feeling frustrated and helpless.
In an effort to distract himself from his problems with his son, Lou decides to throw a party at Mary's apartment. Mary is hesitant at first, but ultimately agrees to host the event. As the party gets underway, Mary's friends continue to comment on the strange shape of the living room, and Lou's son unexpectedly shows up.
Despite the initial awkwardness, the party turns out to be a success, and Mary even manages to find a way to make the square-shaped room work for her. And, in a touching moment, Lou ends up having a heart-to-heart with his son and they begin to repair their relationship.
Overall, "The Square-Shaped Room" is a heartwarming and humorous episode that showcases the camaraderie and resilience of Mary and her friends in the face of unexpected challenges.
