In the fifth episode of The Man in the High Castle's first season, entitled "The New Normal," we see a shift in the power dynamics as our characters try to navigate a world where the Axis powers won World War II. Juliana and Joe rent a truck to transport the film reels to Canon City, but their journey is fraught with danger and uncertainty. Meanwhile, Frank faces severe consequences for his actions, and Juliana's sister Trudy's fate is revealed.
The episode starts by showing us how Frank's decision to take action against the Japanese has affected his life. He's facing the consequences of his actions and has been sent to a detention center. We see him being interrogated and tortured for information, but he doesn't break. He's determined to hold on to his beliefs and remain loyal to his friends.
At the same time, Juliana and Joe are on the road to Canon City. They've rented a truck to transport the film reels, but they're being followed by the Kempeitai, the Japanese secret police. This puts them in a difficult position, as they have to constantly change their plans to avoid getting caught. They eventually manage to outsmart their pursuers and make it to their destination, but not without a few close calls.
In Canon City, Juliana meets up with her contact, Lem, who shows her a new version of the film. This version reveals a different outcome of the war than the one they've been watching. We see Juliana struggling to make sense of this new reality and wondering whether it's all worth it. Joe also has his doubts, as he wonders if they're doing the right thing by trying to change the past.
As Juliana and Joe try to figure out their next move, Frank's sister and Juliana's half-sister, Trudy, makes a surprise appearance. It turns out she's not dead after all, and she's been working with the Resistance. Trudy's appearance brings up a lot of questions for Juliana, as she realizes that her sister has been living a completely different life from her own.
The episode ends with the characters realizing that they're living in a new normal. The world they once knew is gone, and they have to figure out how to live in this new reality. The episode leaves us hanging with a sense of uncertainty and anticipation for what's to come.
Overall, "The New Normal" is a tense and suspenseful episode that raises questions about the nature of reality and the consequences of trying to change the past. It's a turning point in the season, as the characters start to realize the magnitude of what they're up against and what it will take to make a difference.
