Ms. Frizzle and her class are back again on another educational adventure in "The Magic School Bus" season 4 episode 9, titled "Makes A Stink." As they board the trusty school bus, they're surprised to see that the interior has been completely transformed into a greenhouse. Whether by science or magic, this isn't your average school bus!
Ms. Frizzle gives the class an intriguing challenge: they will visit a nearby landfill to learn about decomposition and composting. But with the bus engine running on compost, the kids quickly find themselves at work when they're tasked with making their own compost. The kids take on the challenge head-on and get their hands dirty, learning how to mix different materials together to create a healthy blend of organic materials.
As they arrive at the landfill, the students quickly realize that things don't smell pleasant. They learn that the landfill's waste is not decomposing as it should, and an uncomfortable stench has filled the surrounding area. That's when Ms. Frizzle introduces the kids to the "odor detector 9000," a high-tech device that is used to track down the source of the foul smell.
The students quickly set off with their trusty teacher and the odor detector to locate the smell. This leads them on a wild goose chase as they follow the stink through various locations, including a sewer and a cow pasture. As they track down the source of the odor, the class learns about different types of smells and how they are made.
Just when they think they've tracked down the source of the pungent scent, they realize that there's more to this mystery than they first thought. They discover a chemical waste dump that is leaking toxins into the surrounding environment. The students must take action, and with their newfound knowledge of decomposition and composting, they aim to create a compost that will mitigate the effects of the toxins and improve the area's ecosystem.
In "The Magic School Bus" season 4 episode 9, "Makes A Stink," Ms. Frizzle and her class explore the science of waste decomposition and composting.
