Ms. Frizzle and the class take a field trip to a radio station in the latest episode of The Magic School Bus, season 4 episode 4 titled "Goes On Air". This time, instead of shrinking down and exploring the insides of something, they explore the world of radio broadcasting.
Ms. Frizzle takes the class to visit her friend, a radio DJ at WJFS, the local radio station. Upon arrival, the class discovers a number of other shows being recorded in different areas of the station, including radio dramas and game shows. Fascinated by it all, Ms. Frizzle convinces the DJ to let the students participate in a live radio broadcast.
The class splits off into various groups, each working on a different aspect of the broadcast. Keesha and Ralph handle sound effects, while Arnold writes a dramatic script. Wanda is in charge of the music, while Phoebe does voiceover duties, and Tim and Dorothy Ann handle the technical aspects of actually broadcasting the show.
As the recording proceeds, the class becomes more and more comfortable with their roles, and even Ms. Frizzle gets in on the action as an announcer. However, just as they're about to wrap up the show, they get an urgent call from a nearby town, announcing a flash flood in the area.
Switching to emergency broadcast mode, the class works together to get the message out to their listeners, using their newfound skills in broadcasting to help others stay safe. Using their sound effects skills, they simulate the sound of rushing water, while Phoebe's voiceover warns listeners of the danger. Tim and Dorothy Ann quickly set up a system for broadcasting an evacuation warning, making sure that the nearby residents get the message and evacuate as soon as possible.
The class is relieved to hear back from the station that their emergency broadcast was successful in warning people of the impending flood. Realizing the power that radio broadcasting has to help others and spread important messages, the class leaves the station with a newfound respect for the power of sound, broadcasting, and communication in general.
Overall, "Goes On Air" is a fun and educational episode that teaches kids about the world of radio, while also imparting important lessons about the importance of communication and helping others. Fans of the show will enjoy seeing their favorite characters in a new context, and will undoubtedly learn something new about the world of radio broadcasting along the way.
