In episode 12 of The Magic School Bus season 3, titled "Rocks And Rolls," Ms. Frizzle's class takes a trip to a museum to learn more about rocks and minerals. The students are excited to see the exhibits, but upon arriving, they find that the museum is closed for renovations.
Not to be discouraged, Ms. Frizzle decides to take her class on a trip inside a giant rock that she conjures up with her magic powers. The rock has different layers, each representing a different geological era. As they explore the various layers, the students learn about how rocks form, how they are classified, and how they change over time.
At one point, the rock begins to shake and roll, and the class realizes that they are experiencing an earthquake. Ms. Frizzle explains to the students about plate tectonics and how earthquakes happen as a result of the movement of Earth's plates.
As they journey deeper into the rock, the class comes across a glowing substance that they don't recognize. They use their scientific knowledge to test the substance, and they discover that it is a rare mineral that they have never encountered before.
Throughout the episode, the students are encouraged to ask questions and think critically about the science behind what they are seeing and experiencing. They learn about the rock cycle, the differences between igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, and how minerals are formed.
In the end, the class emerges from the giant rock and finds themselves back at the museum, where they are able to apply what they have learned to the exhibits they see. The episode ends with Ms. Frizzle reminding her students that there is always more to learn and discover in the world of science.
