The Long Firm is a gripping, multi-layered crime drama from BBC1 that first aired in 2004. The show is set in the dark and gritty underworld of 1960s London, and offers a panoramic view of the criminal landscape during a time when gang activity was not only rife across the city, but also had strong links to politics and the establishment.

At the heart of The Long Firm is Harry Starks, a charismatic and ruthless gangster played by the compelling Mark Strong. Harry runs a thriving vice racket and a string of illegal clubs and backstreet drinking dens, but his tendrils spread far wider than the East End. With his suave manner, razor-sharp wit, and searing ambition, Harry manages to insinuate himself into the upper echelons of British society through a web of criminal connections and bribery.

However, the clever and conniving Harry is by no means the only key player in this deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Alongside him is a cast of intriguing characters, including his personal assistant, Ruby (played by Gina McKee); the corrupt police officer, Detective Inspector Sanderson (played by Derek Jacobi); and the lawyer, Lord Teddy Thursby (played by Geoffrey Hutchings). These individuals all have their own agendas and often find themselves playing off one another in unexpected ways.

The story is told across five episodes, each of which is narrated from the point of view of a different character, offering viewers multiple perspectives on the same events. Through this clever storytelling device, we come to appreciate the interplay of loyalties, rivalries, and tensions that exist within Harry's inner circle, as well as the broader social and political context in which these characters operate.

As the plot unfolds, we see Harry become embroiled in a series of increasingly dangerous machinations, culminating in a shocking and dramatic conclusion. Along the way, we witness scenes of violence, betrayal, and deception, but also moments of tenderness, vulnerability, and humanity.

The Long Firm is a visually stunning production, with lavish sets and costumes that transport viewers back in time to a bygone era. The attention to detail is impressive, whether it's the meticulously recreated 1960s architecture, the authentic period cars and clothing, or the carefully researched political and cultural references that pepper the dialogue.

At the same time, though, the show never loses sight of its core focus: the characters and their relationships. Mark Strong gives a towering performance as Harry Starks, imbuing the character with a confident swagger and a brooding intensity. However, it's the subtler moments - the hint of vulnerability in his eyes or the flash of sadness in his smile - that make Harry such a memorable and complex figure.

Similarly, the supporting cast all shine in their respective roles, with Jacobi in particular bringing a certain gravitas to his part as the corrupt DI Sanderson. With its intricate plotting, richly drawn characters, and bold visual style, The Long Firm is a must-watch for anyone interested in crime drama or British history.
