The Lizzie Bennet Diaries Season 1 Episode 53

Ep 53. Royal Dining

  • October 8, 2012

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel "Pride and Prejudice" told through a series of video blogs. In season 1 episode 53, entitled "Royal Dining," Lizzie and her friends attend a dinner party at the home of their acquaintance Caroline Lee.

The episode begins with Lizzie filming a quick intro from outside Caroline's house, expressing her excitement at being invited to a fancy dinner party. Once inside, the group is greeted by Caroline's snobbish mother, who proceeds to introduce Lizzie to her own mother as "Oh, you're the girl with the silly videos." Lizzie is understandably taken aback by this less-than-flattering introduction, but manages to maintain her composure.

As the guests mingle, Lizzie is pleased to see that her crush, the charming and wealthy Bing Lee, is in attendance. However, she soon realizes that he seems more interested in spending time with Caroline than with her. Lizzie becomes jealous and insecure, convinced that Bing and Caroline have a connection and that she is the odd one out.

Meanwhile, Caroline's mother overhears Lizzie and her friends discussing their financial difficulties and begins making snide comments about their lack of wealth and status. Lizzie and her friends are clearly uncomfortable but try to brush off the insults and enjoy the evening. However, when they are seated at the dinner table, things take a turn for the worse. Caroline's mother assigns Lizzie to sit at the "children's table," where she is seated next to Caroline's obnoxious younger brother.

Lizzie is mortified and feels humiliated by the snub. She tries to keep up a brave face, however, and makes conversation with the other guests at her table. As the evening wears on, she becomes increasingly disillusioned with the snobbish and shallow people around her. Bing tries to make conversation with Lizzie and even compliments her on her videos, but she brushes him off, still feeling insecure and upset.

The dinner party culminates in a dance, where Lizzie and Bing finally have a chance to connect. However, Lizzie's moment of happiness is short-lived when she overhears Caroline talking about her and mocking her online videos. Lizzie is hurt and feels betrayed by someone she thought was a friend. She retreats to the bathroom to cry.

The episode ends with Lizzie filming a final video blog from the bathroom, reflecting on the events of the night and how they have made her feel. She admits to feeling foolish and unimportant in the company of the wealthy and elitist crowd she has been trying to fit in with. However, she also realizes that she is proud of who she is and the things she stands for, even if they seem silly to others. She ends the video with a defiant message to the world: "I may not be as wealthy or well-connected as the people at that dinner party, but I am happy and I am loved. And no one can ever take that away from me."
