The show follows the story of Detective Sergeant Nancy Devlin, who works for the Brighton CID of the Sussex Police. Devlin is secretly involved with Frank Le Saux, a well-known local businessman and crime lord, who she has known since childhood. The plot revolves around Devlin's efforts to simultaneously maintain her relationship with Le Saux, while also investigating his criminal activities and protecting her own secrets.

The series begins with a flashback to Devlin's childhood, when she and her mother were involved in a car accident that killed her father. Le Saux saved them from the wreckage and has remained a father figure to Devlin ever since. The present-day narrative picks up with the discovery of the body of a corrupt cop, Martin Ackroyd, who Devlin had previously arrested. Ackroyd had been on Le Saux's payroll, and his murder threatens to reveal their connection.

Devlin is assigned to the case, and she must navigate the suspicions of her colleagues, who are aware of her closeness to Le Saux. Alongside her boss, Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Newman, she investigates the murder and tries to figure out who was responsible. The investigation eventually leads them to uncover a vast criminal conspiracy involving multiple murders, drug trafficking, and money laundering.

As the investigation continues, Devlin finds herself caught between her loyalty to Le Saux and her duty to uphold the law. She is also forced to confront her own past and the secrets that she has kept hidden from everyone around her. Her relationships with both her mentor and her colleagues become increasingly strained as the investigation unfolds, and she realizes that she may not be able to protect everyone she cares about.

The show is a tense and dramatic thriller, with complex characters and an intricate plot. The performances of the cast, particularly Lindsey Coulson as Nancy Devlin, are excellent, and the suspense is maintained throughout the series. The setting of Brighton is also utilized well, with the city's seedy underbelly becoming a character in its own right.

However, some viewers may find the pacing of the show to be slow at times, and the plot can be convoluted, making it difficult to keep track of all the different characters and their relationships. Additionally, some of the plot twists may feel contrived to some viewers. Despite these flaws, The Level remains an engrossing and suspenseful series, and fans of crime dramas will likely find much to enjoy.
